About This Course, Gelli Print & COLLAGE - Remarkable Women

Suitable for complete beginners.

Three relaxed and creative days with all materials supplied.

One Tuesday each week over three weeks.

Tuesday 17 November - 10am-3.45pm

Tuesday 24 November - 10am-3.45pm

Tuesday 1 December - 10am-3.45pm

In this workshop you will be creating a finished collage name artwork using ONLY the papers you have personally printed on a gelli plate. So the finished piece will be truly unique to you.

The theme for this Art Course is Remarkable women. Based on this you will print, design, cut and assemble a letter based collage artwork in celebration of your choice of a remarkable woman. She might be a relative... mother, sister, grandmother, great grandmother. But it might also be a woman who inspires you... your best friend, a female artist, poet, author or actress. Perhaps she works in medical research or was a figure from history: Joan of Arc, Elizabeth the 1st, Cleopatra, or in my featured artwork example, the Victorian actress, Ellen Terry.

Which remarkable woman would you like to celebrate?

Before You Start this Course

Come prepared with knowing who your own remarkable woman is and maybe a few simple notes or bullet points. Bring images and photos too if they will be useful as reference. I'm happy to advise on this should you need guidance prior or before booking. These items will all be a valuable point of reference and inspiration. What colours are a relection of your remarkable woman. Or which colours do you associate with her? Perhaps these are to be found in the motifs or objects you associate with her? Her clothes? Her garden? Her job. Her achievements? What is/was she famous for or what do you remember or love most about her ? Why is she a such a source of inspiration?

Each day will follow a similar timetable:

09.50 meet in cafe area 10.00

Start 13.00

Lunch Break of approx 45 mins. 15.45

Finish

With a maximum class size of 8 people, I will on hand to demonstrate, guide and support, advise and provoke discussion at every stage.

  • Choosing a colour palette for your remarkable woman.
  • Mixing colour on the plate.
  • Printing backgrounds
  • Stencil Printing techniques
  • Creating simple individual letter stencils to use in printing the letters of your remarkable woman’s name
  • Resist Printing techniques...Transfer v Resist. Whats the difference?

Days 2 & 3, Week 2 and 3 - Collage

Collage allows you the freedom to play with composition and colour before having to commit!

As a technique it can take many different forms. Creating with your own hand decorated papers personalises the work and adds to the enjoyment and joy in the finished artwork.

  • What will be the size of the finished piece? Working at a set size will enable your artwork to fit a standard frame.
  • Which finished format will work best? Portrait or landscape?
  • Ways to cut and tear and equipment to use. Scissors, craft knives/scalpels?
  • Selecting letters. Which printed letters to use and which to leave out, (or save for another artwork or cards!).
  • Which simple personal motifs associated with your remarkable woman might you çreate and incorporate ?
  • How to design, breakdown and simplify motifs into layers.
  • How to position and create a balanced composition. Considering arrangement and negative spaces. Colour arrangement.
  • Layers: What's at the 'front' and what's at the 'back'?
  • How to stick it all together and how to remember where the pieces all go!
  • Glues. Which ones for which task.? How to not get in a mess!
  • Finishing touches.
  • Pressing to keep your artwork flat.
  • Framing your work. Advice and techniques.
